Lifetimes of. lambda. 's and. sigma. 's and short-distance nuclear phenomena

It is shown that short distance phenomena and thus quark structure play vital roles in the theory of ..lambda.. and ..sigma.. decays in nuclei. A hybrid two-baryon-quark shell model is used to estimate the lifetimes for nonmesonic decays of ..lambda..'s and ..sigma..'s in nuclear matter.
