Twenty-one witnesses and panelists spoke at a series of oversight hearings held from April 9 to August 2, 1979, to review national long-range mineral adequacy and the need for a strong and rational domestic minerals policy. The subcommittee's concerns are that the lack of cooperation and coordination among separate government agencies has meant that national policies are ignored while each agency pursues its own mission. Secretary of the Interior Cecil D. Andrus cautioned that many of the problems precede the Carter administration before describing the review his department is making to identify and analyze problems. Phase II of the department's review will focus on specific issues. Subsequent witnesses spoke for various bureaus and agencies within the department and for other departments whose role is affected by the minerals industry. The report includes their statements and additional materials submitted for the record. (DCK)
