Research by mine operators and government agencies aimed at controlling the dust created by longwall cutters has revealed that wetting agents, airflow changes, and improved cutting methods are the most effective and economically feasible means of alleviating the problem. An integral shear-mounted dust collector with inlets to capture dust, venturi-powered cowls for use with ranging-arm shearers, remote-controlled cutters, and water sprays for use with double-ranging arm shearers are being investigated by USBM.
