This paper highlights methods for dust control as presented at a Longwall Health and Safety Conference and focusses on a venturispray system and double-drum shearer techniques. Flat venturi sprays were developed for wide area dust screening to provide well defined fan-shaped coverage to greater distance than fan patterns from nozzles in existence, and 3x the atomization of the same fan nozzle without the venturi shroud. Results of research with venturi spray systems indicate that dust levels met federal standards; maintenance requirements were minimal; visibility was good, and performance was accepted by shearer operators, mine management and MSHA officials. Results of research with shearer drums show that drum design can have a significant effect on dust-levels; reducing water quantity and pressure at the shearer sprays did not result in an increase of dust levels downstream; a wetting agent was not effective; cutting with or against the airflow had no significant effect on downstream dust levels; and there was no significant difference in downstream dust levels regardless of web depth.
