The EPA has proposed effluent limitations and guidelines for existing sources and standards of performance and pretreatment standards for new sources applicable to the onshore subcategory, the coastal subcategory, the beneficial use subcategory, and the stripper subcategory. The proposed guidelines preclude the discharge of wastewater pollutants into navigable waters from any source associated with production, field exploration, drilling, well completion or well treatment. They limit the release of oil and grease to 45 mg/liter for the beneficial use subcategory and to 100 mg/liter for the other categories.
