OSTI ID:6539238
An introduction to district heating is outlined. Attention is focussed on the potential of district heating to meet the nation's energy conservation, environmental and social objectives. Basic terms are defined and the principal of district heating operation is described. District heating thermal energy sources, transport and distribution piping, and consumer secondary heating systems are discussed in very general terms. To gain a clearer understanding of the current status of district heating in the US today, a brief historical overview is presented. For comparison, the history and status of district heating in Europe are also summarized. The advantages of district heating are outlined, and the primary factors that impeded the implementation of district heating in the US are discussed.
