Potential for district heating: an historical overview

This paper serves as an introduction to district heating. It focuses attention on the potential of district heating to meet our nation's energy conservation, environmental, and social objectives. Basic terms are defined and the principle of district heating operation is described. District heating thermal energy sources, transmission and distribution piping, and consumer secondary heating systems are discussed in very general terms. To gain a clearer understanding of the current status of district heating in the US today, a brief historical overview is presented. For comparison, the history and status of district heating in Europe is also summarized. The advantages of district heating are outlined, and the primary factors that impeded the implementation of district heating in the United States are discussed.
