Faced with a temporary surplus gas supply, increasing prices from producers and pipelines, customer resistance to higher gas rates, forecasts of a severe winter, and changes in gas usage patterns that could affect peakshaving operations, the US natural gas industry prepared for another record year in peakshaving deliveries to ensure continued cold weather service. The latest annual peakshaving survey projected a top delivery capacity of 78-87 billion CF in a single 24-hr period for the 1982-83 winter. Supplemental gas supplies would include 58.94 billion CF from underground gas storage, 5.25 from propane-air plants, 9.10 from LNG peakshaving and satellite plants, and 0.25 from other sources. This increase in deliverability amounts to 670 million CF/day, the lowest in 15 years.
