A new terminal for the transshipment of Alaska North Slope crude oil through the Panama Canal is in operation in western Panama. Supertankers from Valdez, Alaska, are offloading their oil at the terminal, where it is temporarily stored and then transferred to smaller tankers that can move through the canal. The $58 million terminal, which is managed by Northville Industries Corp., can handle 550,000-600,000 bbl/day and has three berths that can handle tankers of 265,000, 90,000, and 60,000 tons, each of which has a 30,000 ton minimum size requirement. Since opening on 4/11/79, the terminal has handled about 65 tankers from Alaska, about 20 of which were in the 165,000-225,000 ton range. The terminal, according to its owners, will ease the shipment of oil to refiners on the gulf and east coasts of the U.S. and in Puerto Rico.
