Panama transshipment facility proposed

The government of Panama and Northville Industries in the United States have announced a plan to speed surplus Alaskan oil to the Midwest through a transshipment and storage facility. The proposed facility of 450,000 barrels-per-day capacity is designed for easy expansion and is expected to be utilized after proposed pipelines to the Midwest and East are operating, as well as handling the oil until they are completed. This proposal is felt to be less costly than the suggested exchange of Alaskan oil to Japan and Arabian oil to the U.S. East Coast, although the world price for oil will put the savings in company profits rather than lower prices for consumers. The facility, planned for the west coast of Panama, will transship crude oil from very large to small carriers able to pass through the canal. A storage facility in Panama will relieve supply problems due to bad weather delays in shipments from Alaska. (DCK)
