Algerian LNG plays dual peak-shaving role in Georgia

When Atlanta Gas Light Co. added a second LNG peak-shaving plant in Jones County, Ga., a 450,000 bbl LNG tank was built similar to one of the two existing tanks at Riverdale, Ga. and liquefaction facilities were omitted in favor of trucking Algerian LNG from Southern Energy Co.'s LNG receiving terminal at Elba Island, Ga. The tank is being filled with LNG from Riverdale, pending the availability of LNG at Elba Island. The Algerian LNG has a specified heating value of 1138 Btu/cu ft which would increase with weathering and be incompatible with pipeline gas; therefore, plant equipment has been installed at the new plant to strip out propane and butane, store the propane, and use the butane as fuel for the gas-turbine-driven recycle compressor. Propane is used by Atlanta Gas Light Co. for peak shaving in nine propane-air plants located throughout Georgia. Plant components at the Jones County plant are discussed with special attention to provisions for fire protection.
