Major tar sand and heavy oil deposits of the United States

In 1965 the Interstate Oil Compact Commission was a co-sponsor of a major project entitled Surface and Shallow Oil Impregnated Rocks and Shallow Oil Fields in the United States. That publication was the result of a three-year effort by the Bureau of Mines, US Geological Survey, and the IOCC to survey the occurrences of tar sands and shallow oil fields in the continental United States; it estimated that the resource in place was between 2.5 billion and 5.5 billion barrels. For 20 years that publication remained the definitive work in the area of identifying this valuable national resource. Throughout this period, the IOCC, on behalf of its thirty member states, continued to maintain a high interest in the potential as well as actual development of this important resource. For the past two years, there has been pursued a route parallel to the creation of that book. This time the assistance came once again from the US Geological Survey and the US Department of Energy. The IOCC was pleased to supervise the work with subcontract for the major effort going to Lewin and Associates. The publication is the result of that effort. To say that it is a major step forward barely describes the contrast between the maximum 5.5 billion barrels that could be identified in 1962 and the 53.7 billion barrels maximum described here. 144 figures show the deposits by state, region, etc.
