Out of every seven barrels of oil produced in the United States last year, one was gotten out of the ground from a stripper well. A stripper oil well is one which produces fewer than 10 barrels of oil per day, and for more than 35 years the Interstate Oil Compact Commission, in cooperation with the National Stripper Well Association, has been carrying out an annual census of these wells. The end product is the National Stripper Well Survey. The IOCC is an organization of 30 oil and gas producing states dedicated to the conservation of this nation's energy resources by maximum utilization. One of the highest forms of conservation results when stripper wells as a group are permitted to operate using sound engineering, economic and environmental practices. This year both the number of stripper wells and the production attributable to them show an increase over the previous year. This has positive implications for making a contribution to this nation's national defense needs and balance of payments. The number of stripper wells in the US and the oil produced from them are showed.
