National stripper well survey

Book ·
OSTI ID:6381212
The Interstate Oil Compact Commission has detailed and published, in cooperation with the National Stripper Well Association, a statistical account of marginal oil producing wells in the United States. These marginal wells are known in the industry (as well as in the Congress and the Department of Energy and elsewhere) as stripper wells. A stripper well, for the purpose of this survey, is one which is unable to produce in excess of ten barrels of oil per day. During 1979, the number of stripper wells increased by 11,675 and production from stripper wells increased by 2.8 million barrels. This is the first time in six years there has been a production increase, although the number of stripper wells has been on the rise consistently during that period. Likewise, the number of stripper well abandonments continues to decline. In 1971, there were 18,421 well abandonments. This has plunged to the 1979 total of 7668. Similarly, the average daily production per well continued to drop to this year's 2.79 barrels.
