Foreword to National Stripper Well survey

Journal Article · · Amer. Oil Gas Reporter; (United States)

For more than 35 yr, the Interstate Oil Compact Commission has detailed and published, in cooperation with the National Stripper Well Association, a statistical account of marginal oil producing wells in the US. These marginal wells are known as stripper wells. A stripper well, for the purpose of this survey, is one which is unable to produce in excess of 10 bpd. During 1979, the number of stripper wells increased by 11,675 and production from stripper wells increased by 2.8 million bbl. This is the first time in 6 yr there has been a production increase, although the number of stripper wells has been on the rise consistently during that period. Likewise, the number of stripper well abandonments continues to decline. In 1971, this report detailed 18,421 well abandonments. This has plunged to the 1979 total of 7668. Similarly, the average daily production per well continued to drop to this year's 2.79 bbl. What all of this means is that higher prices are extending the life of these wells and permitting America to have the beneficial use of more of its natural resources.
