Results of the annual national stripper well survey conducted by the Interstate Oil Compact Commission are presented, demonstrating continuing growth of US marginal wells. The 1978 total of 8380 abandonments is less than one-half the annual abandonments in 1971. As a corollary, the average production per well has declined to 2.86 BPD. Stripper oil well production declined during 1978 to 391,633,146 BBL. The conclusion is that the effect of the free market price being extended to these marginal wells is the extension of their economic life, with the beneficial result of domestically produced oil.
