Quenching of *UF/sub 6/ (A state) by alkanes

Journal Article · · Int. J. Chem. Kinet.; (United States)
The removal of *UF/sub 6/ (A state) molecules by selected alkanes has been investigated at 25/sup 0/C. The following rate constants (units of 10/sup 11/ l/mol . sec) were evaluated: iso-C/sub 4/F/sub 10/, 0.0432 +- 0.0115; n-C/sub 4/F/sub 10/, 0.0764 +- 0.020; C/sub 2/F/sub 6/, 0.0192 +- 0.0052; CH/sub 4/, 0.0612 +- 0.0061; C/sub 2/H/sub 6/, 3.78 +- 0.60; C/sub 3/H/sub 8/, 5.08 +- 0.60; n-C/sub 4/H/sub 10/, 5.05 +- 0.78; iso-C/sub 4/H/sub 10/, 4.17 +- 1.15; neo-C/sub 5/H/sub 12/, 6.59 +- 0.93; CF/sub 3/-CH/sub 3/, 0.0385 +- 0.0056; CF/sub 2/H-CF/sub 2/H, 0.0729 +- 0.0074; and CF/sub 2/H-CFH/sub 2/, 0.149 +- 0.015. The perfluoro-alkane quenching of *UF/sub 6/ proceeds via a physical mechanism. The other alkane quenching reactions are consistent with a chemical mechanism also contributing in varying degrees which may involve removal of two hydrogens from the alkane. 3 figures, 1 table.
