In the United States, coal use for electrical generation increased by approximately 100 million tons, between 1973 and 1978 -- five years at an annual growth rate of 4.3%. Between 1978 and 1981 -- three years -- coal consumption increased by 120 million tons, or by an average 7.6% annually. Coal use by power plants in the EEC increased from 155 million tons to 180 million tons in 1981, an annual increase of 5.1%. In the EEC countries, production has increased by only 7 million tons since 1977, and demand has increased by over 30 million tons. From a relatively stable trade of 180-190 million metric tons per year -- primarily metallurgical coal -- world trade jumped to almost 250 tons in 1980 and slightly higher in 1981. All this increase in trade has been in steam coal for use under boilers -- to generate electricity, or for use by industries other than the steel industry.
