International coal trade: 1984
The results for international coal trade in 1983 are reviewed in detail. The carry-over effect of world recession and accompanying inventory adjustments served to reduce international hard (anthracite and bituminous) coal trade in 1983. Trade in both the metallurgical (coking) and thermal (steaming) coal sectors declined, with the metallurgical coal market most affected. Preliminary statistics indicate that 132.4 million tons of metallurgical coal and 127.1 million tons of thermal coal were traded in 1983. The outlook for 1984 shows that it will be a year of stabilization and recovery in the international market for coal. With an improvement in the steel industry, there will likely be improvements in the demand for metallurgical coal. There will be an overall improvement in thermal coal trade because the world cement industry has converted to coal and because of increased demand for electricity.
