A pressure-responsive anchor for well packers includes selectively operable wall-engaging members operated by a self-contained hydraulic system. In response to the pressure fluids in a well, the wall-engaging members are pressed into anchoring engagement with a force proportional to this fluid pressure. After the packer and wall-engaging members are selectively extended, the hydraulic system responds to a pressure differential across the apparatus to maintain the apparatus anchored against the casing with an anchoring force proportional to the pressure differential.
