This apparatus controls hydraulically actuated well-engaging anchoring devices with a force proportionately related to the pressure of the well fluid. In a bridge plug equipped with the control apparatus, there are selectively operable wall-engaging devices (including a hydraulic system) which, in response to the pressure of well fluids, are arranged to be pressed into anchoring engagement with the wall of the well bore. To secure the bridge plug for actuation of the wall-gripping means, a spring-biased piston assembly is provided for developing a hydraulic pressure sufficient to frictionally engage the wall-gripping elements with the wall. The spring- biased piston means can be selectively activated or deactivated. (6 claims)
