A well packer or bridge plug apparatus has hydraulically actuated wall-engaging members including expandable slip members which are pressed into anchoring engagement with a force proportional to the pressure differential of the fluid in the well, across the apparatus. This apparatus is capable of being anchored in extreme pressure differentials acting from either direction. A hydraulically actuated, wall engaging means is pressed into an anchoring engagement with the wall by a pressure differential from one direction. Whenever a differential acts across the apparatus from the opposite direction, the expandable slip members are pressed into engagement. With this arrangement of wall- engaging means and slip members, the apparatus will be anchored regardless of the direction of pressure differential acting upon the apparatus. The packer is particularly useful in acidizing, fracturing and cementing operations. (8 claims)
