This new and improved well-packing apparatus has a single wall-engaging anchor that is initially engaged with a predetermined anchoring force. Should a pressure differential develop that requires additional anchoring, the anchor will be pressed more tightly, with a still greater force that is proportionately related to the pressure differential acting across the packer. The packing apparatus has means for initially urging the wall-engaging device against the casing with a predetermined force by applying weight on the apparatus through the supporting tubing string.
