Stagewise gasification in a multiple-hearth furnace

Conference · · ACS Symp. Ser.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6488604
Gasification of municipal solid wastes and sewage sludge as a method of disposal and energy recovery has been demonstrated as a cost-effective, available and environmentally sound method of disposal. The multi-hearth furnace can gasify carbonaceous wastes into utility energy and is a proven technology. The process is described and the operation of the multiple hearth gasifier is diagrammed. The overall process control variables are listed and some test data are presented including material and heat balance data. The economics of the process are discussed. The environmental and economic advantages of using this method for the codisposal of sewage sludge and municipal solid wastes has been demonstrated by Envirotech in an EPA demonstration plant in Concord, California.
