Stagewise gasification in a multiple hearth furnace

Journal Article · · ACS Symp. Ser.; (United States)
The gasification of sewage sludge and/or the combustible fraction of refuse in a multiple-hearth furnace is discussed. The furnace has a drying zone at the top, a pyrolysis zone in the middle, and a gasification zone at the bottom. The charge is fed into the top of the furnace, air and steam are fed into the bottom, the fuel gas is discharged from the top, and char is discharged from the bottom. The gas is used to generate steam that drives a turboelectrical generator. Results are given of a commercial scale gasification test of sludge and refuse at various ratios in a 16-ft-diameter, 6-hearth furnace at 144 ton/day.
