A stagewise control system for use on a multiple hearth gasification reactor, which uses a stagewise countercurrent process is disclosed. The control system maintains the optimum oxygen-solids ratio and temperature at each stage of the reactor. These multiple hearth reactors have been used experimentally and commercially to gasify materials such as municipal sewage sludge, refuse derived fuel, walnut shells, kraft black liquors, fluid bed reactor coke, biological sludge from a petrochemical operation and onion skins. A 144 ton/day 16 ft. tall, six-hearth demonstration unit to obtain data on the co-gasification of municipal sludge and refuse-derived fuel has been constructed. A 40 day test sequence showed that pollution control is easily accomplished with existing technology and that the associated costs are low. The system could generate all of the energy required to produce 30 million gal/day of high quality water while disposing of the sludge and solid wastes from the district service area. This amounts to over $5 million/yr in purchased energy savings and a doubling of existing landfill life.
