Argonne, Illinois was the setting for a field hearing on the importance of basic and applied research (at Ames, Fermi, and Argonne National Labs.) to the economies and well-being of the US and the Midwest. Commerce Secretary Marcolm Baldridge emphasized that the government's primary role is providing a climate conducive to private-sector investment in research and development (R and D), while its secondary role is directly supporting high-risk research in areas which will have long-term benefits. Fifteen additional witnesses represented midwest interests and explained national energy policy positions. Additional material submitted for the record follows their testimony. (DCK)
