A compilation of information on uranium-bearing coal from several individual reports was made which included lignite coal, subbituminous coal, coaly shale, lignitic shale, and carbonaceous shale from deposits in Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The general geological features of uraniferous coal deposits and the geochemistry of U emplacement in the deposits were discussed. Some uranium minerals (carnotite, autunite, torbernite, metazeunerite, and coffinite) were found occurring in uraniferous coals, however they occured only in those samples containing greater than 0.1 percent total U.
