An extensive study was made of available literature and data concerning U deposits in coaly rocks. Included were the following categories: a historical summary of the discovery and development of U deposits in coaly rock, the general features of coaly carbonaceous rocks (including the average U content of these rocks as a class), the physical and chemical form of U as present in coaly rocks, and the role of coaly carbonaceous rocks in the geochemistry of U. Types of deposits examined include unconsolidated peaty material, lignite and subbituminous coal, bituminous and anthracite coal, impure lignite and lignitic shale, and carbonaceous shale. Information on the U content in coaly rocks of the US according to general region, specific seams, and locations is presented in numerous tables. The author states that most of the deposits of U in coaly carbonaceous rocks of more than 0.1 percent U are in thin beds of impure lignite and lignitic shale.
