A summary of US Geological Survey research from 1950 to 1954 on the occurrence and distribution of U in coal of the Western States was compiled. Detection of U was performed using geiger counters, scintillation counters, and carborne scintillation equipment at hundreds of exposures in the Western States. Core samples were taken in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Idaho. Chemical and spectrographic analyses of the samples were made to identify the amount and mode of occurrence of U in the coal. In higher grade uraniferous coals the U minerals autuite, zeunerite, torbernite, carnotite, becquerelite, and coffinite were identified, but in lower grade uniferous coal individual U minerals were not found. In both high- and low-grade uraniferous coals, most, or all of the U contained is disseminated in the carbonaceous material.
