Don't count gas out - a case for increased natural gas use

Journal Article · · Energy (Stamford, Conn.); (United States)

Increased supplies of natural and supplemental gas energy are important if the U.S. is to reduce its excessive reliance on foreign oil. Gas can reduce oil use in all markets served by oil products. This article reviews gas supply and demand status in both the short- and long-terms, focusing on new markets for gas energy likely to emerge over the next two decades. Examples of such new demands are: (a) gas air conditioning to balance seasonal peaks in both gas and electricity demand; (b) gas-fired cogeneration in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings; (c) gas use in urban fleet vehicles large enough to justify fixed retrofit and compression costs; and (d) select use of gas in boilers in conjunction with coal conversion, and/or increased use of high-sulfur residual oil with natural gas.
