Cooling mechanisms in the primordial medium

Journal Article · · Sov. Astron. Lett. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

Calculations are made for the abundance of H/sub 2/ molecules and H/sub 2//sup +/ ions in primordial matter, and for the efficiency with which they would have cooled hot (Tapprox. =10/sup 4/ /sup 0/K) protogalactic gas. The main contribution to the cooling comes from the H/sub 2/. The influence of the background radiation emanating from protoclusters of galaxies upon the H/sub 2/ and H/sub 2//sup +/ abundance is calculated. H/sub 2/ molecules would have been formed in sufficient quantity when z=2--3 if the protogalactic gas density was of order 10 cm/sup -3/.
