Cooling of hot protogalactic gas by the H/sub 2//sup +/ molecular ion

The cooling function of hot (Tapprox. =10/sup 4/ /sup 0/K) protogalactic gas due to excitation of the vibrational levels of the H/sub 2//sup +/ molecular ion is calculated. The main contribution to the vibrational excitation of H/sub 2//sup +/ will come from collisions with H atoms.
