Thermochemical evolution of protogalactic gas in the adiabatic theory of galaxy formation

The kinetics of H/sub 2/ molecule formation in primordial isobarically cooling gas is considered. Initially the gas is taken to be fully ionized at T = 2 x 10/sup 4/ /sup 0/K, corresponding to the postshock conditions in the adiabatic theory of galaxy formation. H/sub 2/ will develop quite swiftly: 3 x 10/sup 5/ yr after the shock front crosses a gas element the relative H/sub 2/ abundance will reach roughly-equal10/sup -4/, enabling the shocked gas to cool from 10/sup 4/ /sup 0/K to 10/sup 2/ /sup 0/K in troughly-equal10/sup 7/ yr. The cooling protogalactic cloud will not break up by thermal instability.
