Tentative agreements for collaboration between the U.S. and the People's Republic of China could include developing coal, hydroelectric projects, high-energy and nulear physics, and renewable energy sources. The largest project the U.S. may participate in is the construction of a hydroelectric dam on the Yangtze Gorge. U.S. assistance is sought for the site investigation and foundation design of another project on the Yellow River. Chinese engineers may come to this country for training in high-voltage transmission systems. Several coal project will be negotiated, but these will require industry rather than government participation. The U.S. may assist with a variety of physics research equipment, such as lasers and a synchrotron. Evaluation of oil resources may come in a later separate agreement.
