The types of injuries that vegetables may incur from exposure to air pollution, as well as the economic impact to New Jersey farmers are discussed. A survey of air pollution injury to vegetable crops in New Jersey during 1971 revealed a loss of approximately $1 million. The pollutants of major concern are sulfur dioxide, hydrogen fluoride, chlorine, ozone and peroxyacetyl nitrate. The symptoms produced by these pollutants are leaf margin necrosis, stunted growth, and depressed yields.
