This patent describes a process for absorbing hydrogen sulfide comprising the step of contacting a gas feed comprising hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide with a solution comprising at least one dissolved sorbent selected from the group consisting of alkali metal ethylenedimaine-tetraacetate and alkali metal nitriliotriacetate, in the substantial absence of oxidizing agents which can oxidize hydrogen sulfide, under such contacting conditions as to absorb a greater portion per unit time of H/sub 2/S than CO/sub 2/ from the gas feed.
