This paper describes a process for the separation and recovery of carbon dioxide. It comprises: contacting a gas mixture which comprises carbon dioxide with a solid sorbent comprising at least one compound selected from the group consisting of alkali metal oxides and alkali metal hydroxides and lanthanum oxide, under such conditions as to obtain a gas product having a lower concentration of carbon dioxide than the gas mixture and a solid sorbent containing absorbed carbon dioxide which has been removed from the gas mixture; substantially separating the solid sorbent from the gas product, so as to obtain a separated solid sorbent and heating the separated solid sorbent under such conditions as to substantially desorb carbon dioxide contained in the solid sorbent so as to obtain a regenerated solid sorbent.
