Three wells drilled by Panarctic Oils Ltd. near Lougheed Island comprise the first significant oil discoveries in the high Canadian Arctic. The largest of these - the 80-100 mi/sup 2/ Cisco field - holds an estimated 1 trillion CF of natural gas reserves. In 1982 Panarctic completed a successful delineation well, the Cisco C-42, that confirmed an extension of the reservoir structure; during the 1983 drilling season, it will spud a second Cisco well to define the structure more clearly. Rounding out the drilling program is the deep wildcat on Melville Island's Sabine Peninsula, site of the Drake Point and Hecla gas fields. Spudded in mid-October, the well is the first of a four-well Permo-Pennsylvania deep-drilling program. Total depth for each well ranges from 14,000 to 22,000 ft.
