The most difficult natural conditions for prospecting, exploration and working of oil and gas fields are characteristic for the regions beyond the Polar Circle in North America, in the Canadian part of the Bofort Sea and on the Arctic islands. In the last 4-5 years, major reserves of oil and gas have been revealed in this region. The development of these reserves requires the creation of new technical resources for drilling operations under conditions of complicated ice situation. Artificial sand islands are also sprinkled. Work in the Arctic requires considerable volumes of scientific research to be done both by the oil companies and by the independent organizations. The independent researchers hypothesize that for start-up of the facilities for oil recovery at the level of 41,000 T/day in the Bofort Sea until the end of the century, it is necessary to drill 500 wells and invest about 25 billion pounds sterling. A major project for development of natural gas in the Arctic is underway by a number of companies in the region of the Mackenzie River delta-Bofort Sea. At the gas field of Drake Point, near Melville Island, whose gas reserves are estimated at 102 billion m/sup 3/, it is planned in 20 years to recover 60 billion m/sup 3/ of gas. The cost of the project will be 2.5 billion Canadian dollars. The gas reserves in the region of the Mackenzie River delta-Bofort Sea are estimated at 2.83-5.66 trillion m/sup 3/, and oil 10.275 million T.
