As nations become aware that the availability and price of raw materials are basic to economic development and political stability, shifts are occurring in the independence demanded by mineral-rich nations from the industrialized countries which historically dominated them. The international mining industry has been disrupted and in some cases eliminated, but the developing countries are also vulnerable to economic disruptions in their trading partners, and an accommodation process can be seen. A case study illustrates how equity joint ventures and contract/work agreements can satisfy the changing national aspirations of host countries. A business model is used to evaluate negotiable economic factors and provide an investment opportunity analysis system with organizational, problem-solving, and system implications. 12 figures. (DCK)
