Policy, not theoretical mineral economics, generally captures the most attention in the mining industry, but economic concepts of exhaustible assets need to be applied. A case study of the interaction of environmental concerns are shifting in focus from the cost side of production processes to production results and expanding to include social and political as well as physical and economic issues. The concepts of a conserver society affect the mining industry in the areas of protective regulation, the demand for minerals, the evaluation of new mining projects, and the hazards of mining wastes.
