Biological differences in cadmium and zinc turnover

Journal Article · · Arch. Environ. Health; (United States)

In rat plasma, /sup 109/Cd was mainly associated with ..alpha..-globulin fraction and /sup 65/Zn was bound to ..alpha..- and ..beta..-globulins. Subcutaneously injected cadmium chloride Cd 109 and zinc chloride Zn 65 resulted in rapid clearance of /sup 109/Cd from blood plasma, as compared to /sup 65/Zn. Blood cells accumulated /sup 65/Zn more rapidly than /sup 109/Cd. Greatest uptakes of /sup 109/Cd per unit weight of tissue were by liver, kidneys, and pancreas, but that of /sup 65/Zn was by the pancreas. From all tissues, /sup 65/Zn was depleted eventually. In the first six hours after isotope dose, testis tissue concentrated more /sup 109/Cd than /sup 65/Zn. In testes, /sup 65/Zn-influx continued for 168 hours, without further /sup 1/)2)/sup 9/Cd increase. Both isotopes were excreted predominantly via intestinal tract. Fecal and urinary excretion of /sup 109/Cd and )2and/sup 5/Zn was accelerated by 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanol. Results indicate /sup 109/Cd follows metabolic pathways different from those of /sup 65/Zn. 30 references, 6 figures, 3 tables.
