An investigation into impurities present in the intermediate fraction in the refining of crude benzol head fractions at coking plants was presented. Chemical analysis of the fractions were performed using chromotography. Chromatographs were taken after various treatments of the fractions to see which species were removed. The treatments used were 90% sulfuric acid and a 10-15% aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide. It was concluded that the presence of nitriles, in addition to acidic compounds, in the feedstock for production of dicyclopetadiene produced complication of the refining. The extraction of these impurities was feasible by treating with the aqueous NaOH solution.
