Inhibition of the rate of growth of Candida utilis in the exponential phase by copper begins when the copper concentration is 0.3-0.4 mM. Growth is stopped completely by 1.3 mM copper. Inhibition of the rate of growth of C. utilis by copper ions obeys the equation of noncompetitive inhibition of enzyme reactions. Consequently, copper ions inhibit one reaction in metabolism which is a bottleneck for the whole process of growth of the population. 4 references, 2 figures, 2 tables.
