Catalytic dehydrochlorination (DHC) of polychloroalkanes containing the CCl/sub 3/ group by use of metal chlorides is one of the most widely used methods for synthesizing compounds containing the dichlorovinyl group. In this study the authors have compared the catalytic activity of metal carbonyls and related catalytic systems in the absence of hydrogen donors on the DHC reactions of gem-trichloromethyl compounds, in particular 1,1,1-trichlorooctane. Mo(CO)/sub 6/ was found to be an effective catalyst for the dehydrochlorination of the gem-trichloromethyl group in ..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..-trichloro-, ..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..,omega-tetrachloro-, and ..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..,..gamma..-tetrachloroalkanes. Triphenylphosphine lowers the catalytic activity of Mo(CO)/sub 6/ in the dehydrochlorination of gem-trichloromethyl compounds and increases the activity of Fe(CO)/sub 5/ in the same reaction.
