Trichloromethylation of carbonyl compounds in the presence of crown ethers

The reaction of potassium trichloroacetate with carbonyl compounds (aldehydes, acid anhydrides and chlorides) in acetonitrile in the presence of crown ethers leads to an increase of 11-19% in the yield of the C-trichloromethylation products and reduces the reaction time by an order of magnitude. The macrocyclic perhydrodibenzo-18-crown-6 polyether, used as phase-transfer catalyst, is more effective than dibenzo-18-crown-6.
