Recovery of indole by preparative chromatography
Indole and its derivatives are the feedstock for synthesis of physiologically active preparations (heteroauxins, tryptophan, et al.), rubber and polymer stabilizers, and corrosion inhibitors. The carbonization industry is at present the sole supplier of indole, which is isolated in amounts of abouro 2 t/year from coal-tar fractions. The indole content of coal tar amounts to about 0.2 to 0.3% for plants in the South and 0.4 to 0.5% for those in the East. During processing of coal tar, the indole is concentrated principally in the naphthalene and wash-oil fractions. Depending on the tar-rectification conditions, up to 60 to 70% of the total amount of indole is concentrated in the wash-oil fraction; this amounts to 1 to 1.5% for southern plants and 3 to 3.5% for eastern plants. This article describes the results of preparative chromatographic extraction of indole from wash-oil fractions in two stages, following preliminary removal of the fluorene present. It was shown that preparative chromatography can be combined with rectificaition and crystallization.
