Indole isolation from coal--tar wash--oil fraction

Journal Article · · Coke Chem., USSR (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6176446

Coal tar contains 0.2 to 0.3% of indole; when the tar is distilled, it concentrates in the wash-oil fraction, which contains 3 to 5% of indole. Indole is an interesting starting point for commerical organic synthesis; one possible large-scale outlet is the production of tryptofan. Laboratory data are presented on the isolation of indole from run-of-plant wash-oil fraction and narrow cuts obtained by rectification. Indole can be isolated directly, without rectification, but the product is less pure than that obtained from narrow cuts, and itself requires rectification. A basic flowsheet is presented for indole production.
