North slope oil a bargain for lower 48 refiners

A discussion on the marketing of Prudhoe Bay crude, primarily by Atlantic Richfield Co., Exxon Co. U.S.A., and Standard Oil Co. Ohio, covers the high demand for this crude, estimated at up to 100,000 bbl/day above the 1.5 million bbl/day supply, despite its 1% sulfur content and low gravity (27/sup 0/API), because of its low price, currently $21/bbl but rising to an expected $30/bbl when decontrol is complete after Oct. 1981, and assured supply; the estimated 950,000 bbl/day consumed at refineries in California and Washington; shipment of Prudhoe Bay crude through the Panama Canal, using the Northville Industries Corp.
